What does a square mean in astrology?

Two planets 90° apart. OrbHeaven counts a square within 7° in a birth chart, or 8° when the Sun or Moon is one of the pair. Astrologers class it as a hard aspect and read it as friction: the two planets pull in directions that do not fit, which is uncomfortable and, in the tradition, where effort and growth come from.
