What does retrograde actually mean?
A planet appears to move backwards against the stars for a stretch, because the Earth is overtaking it or being overtaken on the inside track. Nothing actually reverses. In a birth chart, a retrograde planet is read as turned inward, working over its subject privately before showing it. Mercury does this three times a year, so it is the one people notice.
