What is an applying aspect?

Kevin Blaxton — software builder; astrology student for 40+ years · figures computed by the OrbHeaven engine

An applying aspect is one that is still forming: the faster of the two planets is moving toward the exact aspect angle, so the gap between them is closing rather than widening. The tradition reads an applying aspect as building — a theme still developing, or a transit whose exact day is yet to come — and usually gives it more weight than a separating one.

What is an applying aspect?

It is a matter of relative motion. Two planets move along the zodiac at different speeds; when the faster one is approaching the exact angle to the slower — so that the separation is shrinking toward 0°, 60°, 90°, 120° or 180° — the aspect is applying. When it has passed exact and the gap is growing, it is separating. The figure shows an aspect applying, exact, then separating over time.

An aspect over time: applying as the angle closes toward exact, then separating as it opens again. While the gap is shrinking the aspect is applying — read as the building, more weighted phase.

How it is told

By the sign of the rate of change of the separation. OrbHeaven compares the two bodies’ speeds: if the angle between them is decreasing toward an exact aspect, it is applying; if increasing, separating. In a birth chart the faster body’s motion decides it; in a transit, the moving planet applies to the fixed natal point. The same engine that finds the aspect reports whether it is applying.

Astrological tradition

What it is read as

Interpretation, labelled as such: an applying aspect is read as the stronger and more active of the two directions — a theme that keeps developing, or, in forecasting, an influence still building toward its exact moment. Most astrologers weight an applying aspect more heavily than a separating one, treating what is still forming as more potent than what has passed.

Historical scholarship

A short history

The distinction is old: medieval and Hellenistic astrology spoke of the “application” and “separation” of the Moon and planets, and built rules of timing and judgement on which aspects were forming and which were past. The emphasis on the applying aspect as the weightier one runs through that tradition.

Common misconceptions

How do you tell an applying aspect from a separating one?
By whether the angle is closing or opening. If the faster planet is still moving toward exact, the aspect is applying; once it has passed exact and the gap widens, it is separating.
Why does an applying aspect matter more?
The tradition treats what is still building as more potent than what has passed, so an applying aspect is usually given the greater weight — and in a transit it means the exact day is still ahead.
