What is a separating aspect?

Kevin Blaxton — software builder; astrology student for 40+ years · figures computed by the OrbHeaven engine

A separating aspect is one whose exact moment has already passed: the faster planet is moving away from the exact aspect angle, so the gap is widening rather than closing. The tradition reads a separating aspect as a theme largely worked through, or a transit whose peak is behind — the counterpart to an applying aspect, and usually given less weight.

What is a separating aspect?

It is the other half of relative motion. Once the faster of two planets has passed the exact angle to the slower — so the separation is now growing away from 0°, 60°, 90°, 120° or 180° — the aspect is separating. Before that point, while the gap was closing, it was applying. The figure shows an aspect exact and then separating as the angle opens.

An aspect over time: exact, then separating as the angle opens again. While the gap is widening the aspect is separating — read as the fading, less weighted phase.

How it is told

By the sign of the rate of change of the separation, exactly as for an applying aspect but reversed: OrbHeaven compares the two bodies’ speeds, and if the angle to the exact aspect is increasing, the aspect is separating. In a transit that means the moving planet has already passed the natal point. The engine that finds the aspect reports which phase it is in.

Astrological tradition

What it is read as

Interpretation, labelled as such: a separating aspect is read as something already largely expressed — a theme that was loudest early and has since settled, or, in forecasting, an influence past its exact peak and fading. Most astrologers give it less weight than an applying aspect, treating what has passed as less active than what is still forming.

Historical scholarship

A short history

Like its counterpart, the separating aspect comes from the old doctrine of the “application” and “separation” of the planets, central to medieval horary and electional astrology. A separating Moon, in particular, was read for what a matter was moving away from.

Common misconceptions

Is a separating aspect weaker than an applying one?
The tradition usually weights it less, treating what has passed exact as fading. It is not meaningless — it is read as a theme largely worked through — but an applying aspect is generally given the greater weight.
How do you tell a separating aspect?
The exact angle has already passed and the gap is widening: the faster planet is moving away from exact rather than toward it.
