Moon in astrology: what it means, and where it is

Astrological tradition reads the Moon as the private side of a person: feeling, instinct, habit, memory and the need to feel safe. Astronomically it is the Earth’s natural satellite, the nearest and fastest body on a chart, round the zodiac in 27.3 days. A birth chart shows where the Moon was at birth, by sign, degree and house, and it is the placement a birth time most often decides. The position is calculated; what it means is a reading.

The Moon, as measured

The Moon is the Earth’s natural satellite, about 384,000 km away on average, the nearest body on any chart. It is also the fastest: 11.8 to 15.4 degrees a day, and it never appears to move backwards. It crosses a sign in 47 to 61 hours. It keeps two clocks. It goes once round the zodiac in 27.3 days, but takes 29.5 days to go from one New Moon to the next, because the Sun has moved on meanwhile and the Moon has to catch it up. Its symbol is ☽︎.

  • New Moon, 11 Sep
  • back to the same degree, 27.3 days
  • New Moon again, 29.5 days
  • the Sun’s month
From the engine: the lunation running today, the Moon’s path drawn as a spiral so its lap shows. The Sun moves on along the brass arc, so New Moon comes again only after 29.5 days.

Phases, and the day you were born

A phase is an angle

A phase is not a separate coordinate. It is the angle from the Sun to the Moon along the zodiac, from two calculated longitudes: 0° is the New Moon, 90° the first quarter, 180° the Full Moon, 270° the last quarter. So the Moon’s aspects to the Sun are phases too: a conjunction at birth is a New Moon, an opposition a Full Moon, a square a quarter.

From the engine, today: the Sun and Moon at their calculated longitudes, 310° apart, a waning crescent; the quarters counted from the Sun.

Without a birth time

In one civil date the Moon covers 11.8 to 15.4 degrees, a little less or more on a day the clocks change, so a date alone cannot fix it to the degree. On 44 dates in 100 it changes sign during the day; then, without a birth time, OrbHeaven shows both signs and no degree. About nine in ten of its aspects can then be called only possible: in orb for some moments of the day and not others.

From the engine, in universal time: each bar runs from the Moon’s place at a date’s first moment to its last. On 13 of these 31 dates it changes sign (accent bars).

Astronomy or astrology?

The position is astronomy. OrbHeaven calculates the Moon for the moment and place of birth with a published astronomical engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac, shown to the degree and minute; the method is set out on how it works. Everything below this line is astrology: what the tradition reads into that position.

Interpretation

What the tradition reads the Moon as

In the astrological tradition the Moon stands for the private side of a person: feeling, instinct, habit, memory, care and the need to feel safe.

Rulership: Cancer

The Moon rules Cancer, and by association the fourth house, in the old scheme and the modern alike. The tradition also grades it exalted in Taurus, in detriment in Capricorn and in fall in Scorpio; the chart measures none of that. OrbHeaven uses rulership only for the chart ruler: the Moon for a Cancer Ascendant.

Moon in the signs

The Moon changes sign every two to two and a half days, so a Moon sign separates people born in the same week. The tradition reads the sign as how a person feels, and what they need to feel safe:

Aries
quick to feel and quick to act; impatient, honest, and over it fast.
Taurus
its exaltation; steady feelings, comfort, and a need for calm and routine.
Gemini
feelings talked through; curious, restless, and soothed by news and good company.
Cancer
its own sign; protective, tender, and tied to home and family.
Leo
warm and proud; a need to be noticed, and generous with affection.
Virgo
calmed by order; attentive, practical, and anxious when things are untidy.
Libra
calmed by harmony; a need for company, fairness and pleasant surroundings.
Scorpio
its fall; intense, private, loyal, and slow to forgive or forget.
Sagittarius
needing room; cheerful, restless, and soothed by plans, travel and open skies.
Capricorn
its detriment; reserved and self-reliant, with feelings kept firmly under control.
Aquarius
cool on the surface; independent, friendly, more at ease with ideas.
Pisces
porous and sympathetic; dreamy, easily moved, and in need of retreat.

Moon in the houses

The house adds where. Houses are drawn from the birth time and place, so they need a time: without one OrbHeaven leaves them out rather than guessing. With a time, the tradition reads the house as where a person looks for comfort and belonging:

1st house
the self and the manner; moods worn openly, and a face that shows them.
2nd house
money and possessions; security found in what one owns and earns.
3rd house
siblings, neighbours and daily talk; feelings worked out by talking them through.
4th house
home and family; the Moon’s own house, and a deep need for roots.
5th house
romance, play and children; feelings expressed through making things and through play.
6th house
work, health and routine; comfort found in habits and in being useful.
7th house
partnership; a need for closeness, and moods that follow a partner’s.
8th house
shared money, intimacy and crisis; deep attachments, private depths and strong bonds.
9th house
travel, study and belief; a mind that settles in faraway places and ideas.
10th house
career and reputation; a public life that rises and falls with feeling.
11th house
friends and groups; belonging found among friends, groups and shared aims.
12th house
solitude and the hidden; a private inner life, and a need for retreat.

Moon aspects

An aspect is a particular angle between the Moon and another point, within an orb; OrbHeaven shows six, and gives the Moon a degree more orb than other bodies, as it does the Sun. The Moon can make all six with every body on the chart. The tradition reads easy aspects as feelings that flow and hard ones as feelings in tension. The angle is measured; the reading is not.

Finding the Moon in your own chart

Draw the free birth chart and the Moon is listed with its sign, degree, house and aspects. The Timeline dates the slower planets’ aspects to your Moon and marks each New and Full Moon, in your house when the time is known; it does not follow the Moon itself through the signs. Without a birth time it shows a transit to your Moon only when it holds for every moment of your birth date. The sky today shows where the Moon is and the next New and Full Moon, and the When page reads its phase and sign, following the tradition: a convention, not a forecast. Without a birth time, the Moon is worked out across the whole birth date as a range of whole degrees, and on a day it changes sign, both signs and no degree. No Ascendant, no houses, nothing guessed.

Questions about the Moon

What is my Moon sign?
The sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born, on the tropical zodiac. It changes sign every two to two and a half days, so the free chart works it out from the date, time and place, and shows both signs when the date cannot decide.
Why does my Moon sign need a birth time?
Because the Moon moves 11.8 to 15.4 degrees in a day and changes sign on 44 dates in 100. On those dates the hour of birth decides the sign; on the others it still decides the degree, the house and which aspects are in orb.
What was the Moon’s phase when I was born?
It follows from two positions the free chart already gives: the Sun’s and the Moon’s. Count from the Sun to the Moon along the zodiac; near 0° is a New Moon, near 180° a Full Moon. Without a birth time, the angle is a range rather than a single figure.
Does the Moon ever go retrograde?
Never. Planets appear to move backwards because the Earth overtakes them or they overtake the Earth. The Moon goes round the Earth itself, so seen from here it always moves forward, never less than 11.7 degrees a day.
Why are there two lengths of month?
The Moon takes 27.3 days to come back to the same place in the zodiac, but the Sun moves on meanwhile, so the Moon needs about two more days to catch it up. New Moon to New Moon is therefore 29.5 days.
How does OrbHeaven calculate the Moon?
With astronomy-engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac for the moment of birth, to the degree and minute. Every chart prints the engine, zodiac, house system and universal time, so it can be checked against any ephemeris.
