Sun in astrology: what it means, and where it is

Astrological tradition reads the Sun as the centre of a person: purpose, vitality and the wish to be seen, the self the rest of the chart arranges itself around. Astronomically it is a star, and seen from Earth it goes once round the zodiac a year, never backwards. The sign it was in at birth is the familiar star sign; a birth chart also gives its degree and house. The position is calculated; what it means is a reading.

The star, as measured

The Sun is a star, the one the Earth orbits. Seen from Earth it goes once round the zodiac in 365.24 days, equinox to equinox, and never appears to move backwards: its path is the Earth’s own orbit seen from inside. It covers a little under a degree a day in early July, when the Earth is farthest from it, and a little over in early January, so it spends 29.4 days in Capricorn and 31.5 in Cancer. Its symbol is ☉︎.

Your Sun sign, exactly

What a Sun sign is

A Sun sign is the sign holding the Sun’s calculated longitude at the moment of birth, on the tropical zodiac. That zodiac starts where the Sun stands at the March equinox, and that point is 0° Aries whatever stars lie behind it; the constellation has drifted out of line since, which is why the star sign is not where the stars are.

Born near a change of sign

The Sun changes sign at one instant, not at midnight on a fixed date. The instant comes about six hours later each year and about eighteen hours earlier in a leap year, so from 1950 to 2050 every boundary fell on two or three different dates even in universal time. Near a boundary, only the date, time and place decide.

Without a birth time

A birth date alone fixes the Sun to within about a degree. On about one birth date in 30, though, it changes sign during the day, and then, without a birth time, OrbHeaven shows both signs and no degree rather than pick one.

The solar return

A solar return is the moment the Sun comes back to the exact longitude it held at birth. Over a life it falls on the birthday in a little over half of years and on the day before in most of the rest, and it drifts earlier with age: after 60 the day before is about as likely as the birthday, and now and then it is two days early. OrbHeaven marks it on the Timeline each year; without a birth time it gives the date or a short range, and casts no return chart, whose Ascendant and houses need the time.

Astronomy or astrology?

The position is astronomy. OrbHeaven calculates the Sun for the moment and place of birth with a published astronomical engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac, shown to the degree and minute; the method is set out on how it works. Everything below this line is astrology: what the tradition reads into that position.

Interpretation

What the tradition reads the Sun as

In the astrological tradition the Sun stands for the centre of a person: purpose, vitality, will, pride and the wish to be seen.

Rulership: Leo

The Sun rules Leo, and by association the fifth house, in the old scheme and the modern alike. The tradition also grades it exalted in Aries, in detriment in Aquarius and in fall in Libra; the chart measures none of that. OrbHeaven uses rulership only for the chart ruler: the Sun for a Leo Ascendant.

Sun in the signs

Everyone born in the same month or so shares a Sun sign, which makes it the least particular part of a chart. The tradition reads the sign as the style of being oneself:

Aries
first in and quick to start; courage, directness and a need to lead.
Taurus
steady and patient; comfort, persistence and a love of what lasts.
Gemini
curious and quick; talk, variety and a mind that moves between things.
Cancer
protective and feeling; home, memory, family and care for those close.
Leo
its own sign; warmth, pride, generosity and a wish to be seen.
Virgo
careful and useful; detail, skill and a drive to improve things.
Libra
its fall; fairness, partnership and a wish for balance and grace.
Scorpio
intense and private; depth, loyalty and a will that does not let go.
Sagittarius
restless and hopeful; travel, belief, and a long search for meaning.
Capricorn
ambitious and patient; structure, duty, and the long climb toward a goal.
Aquarius
its detriment; independence, ideals and a mind that thinks for the group.
Pisces
gentle and porous; imagination, compassion, and edges that blur into others.

Sun in the houses

The house adds where. Houses are drawn from the birth time and place, so they need a time: without one OrbHeaven leaves them out rather than guessing. With a time, the tradition reads the house as where a life looks to shine:

1st house
the self and the manner; a strong presence, and a life lived in plain view.
2nd house
money and possessions; worth built through what one earns and keeps.
3rd house
siblings, neighbours and daily talk; a life lived through words and learning.
4th house
home and family; roots, privacy, and a centre found at home.
5th house
the Sun’s own house; creativity, play, romance, children and the joy of making.
6th house
work, health and routine; pride in being useful and doing it well.
7th house
partnership; a self found in and through others, and in close bonds.
8th house
shared money, intimacy and crisis; depth sought where things are hidden.
9th house
travel, study and belief; a life widened by distance and ideas.
10th house
career and reputation; a public role, and the wish to be known for it.
11th house
friends and groups; a centre found among others with shared aims.
12th house
solitude and the hidden; a private self, and service out of sight.

Sun aspects

An aspect is a particular angle between the Sun and another point, within an orb; OrbHeaven shows six, and gives the Sun a degree more orb than other bodies, as it does the Moon. Mercury and Venus never stray far enough from the Sun to make any aspect to it but a conjunction. The tradition reads easy aspects as support and hard ones as friction. The angle is measured; the reading is not.

Finding the Sun in your own chart

Draw the free birth chart and the Sun is listed first, with its sign, degree, house and aspects. The star sign people know is only this one position: the chart also places the Moon, Mercury to Pluto, the Ascendant, the houses and the aspects, where the time allows. The Timeline dates the slower planets’ aspects to your Sun and marks your solar return; it does not follow the Sun itself as it moves. The sky today shows where it is now; the When page counts its angles in favour of training hard, a convention, not a forecast. Without a birth time, the Sun is worked out across the whole birth date as a range of whole degrees, and on the day it changes sign, both signs and no degree. No Ascendant, no houses, nothing guessed.

Questions about the Sun

What is my Sun sign?
The sign the Sun was in at the moment you were born, on the tropical zodiac. For most birthdays the date settles it; near a change of sign it takes the time and place too.
I was born on a cusp. Which sign am I?
One or the other: the calculation has no cusp sign. The Sun crosses each boundary at one instant, which moves by hours from year to year. With the date, time and place the free chart gives one sign; without a time, on the day it changes, it shows both.
Is my solar return on my birthday?
In a little over half of years; otherwise usually the day before. The calendar adds a quarter-day a year through its leap days while the Sun takes slightly less than a quarter-day extra each year, so the return drifts earlier over a life.
Does the Sun ever go retrograde?
Never. Every planet sometimes appears to move backwards, as the Earth overtakes it or it overtakes the Earth. The Sun’s path is the Earth’s own orbit seen from inside, so it always moves forward.
How does OrbHeaven calculate the Sun?
With astronomy-engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac for the moment of birth, to the degree and minute. Every chart prints the engine, zodiac, house system and universal time, so it can be checked against any ephemeris.
