When is Mercury retrograde in 2026?
Kevin Blaxton · 6 min read ·
Mercury is retrograde three times in 2026: from 26 February to 20 March, from 29 June to 23 July, and from 24 October to 13 November, each for about three weeks and each in a water sign. Retrograde does not mean Mercury reverses. It is an optical effect: as the faster Earth overtakes it on the inside, Mercury appears to slow, stop and drift backwards against the stars for a while, then turn around. The dates are astronomy and can be checked against any ephemeris; what they are taken to mean is a separate question, and a contested one.

Is Mercury actually moving backwards?
No. Mercury never reverses its orbit. Three or four times a year the Earth, on a faster inside track, overtakes it, and from our moving vantage point the planet seems to slow, pause and slide backwards for about three weeks before resuming. It is the same illusion as a slower car appearing to drift back as you pass it. OrbHeaven marks the exact moment Mercury turns from the planet’s own motion; why it looks that way draws the geometry in full.
What are the exact dates in 2026?
Three windows, all in water signs. Mercury stations retrograde, drifts back, then stations direct about three weeks later. The dates below are in universal time (UTC), computed by OrbHeaven’s engine, and they sit on the 2026 transits calendar with every other station and sign change. In your own time zone a date can fall a day either side.
- 26 February – 20 March, in Pisces
- Mercury stations retrograde at 22°33′ Pisces on 26 February and stations direct at 8°29′ Pisces on 20 March — about 22 days.
- 29 June – 23 July, in Cancer
- Retrograde at 26°15′ Cancer on 29 June, direct at 16°19′ Cancer on 23 July — about 24 days.
- 24 October – 13 November, in Scorpio
- Retrograde at 20°58′ Scorpio on 24 October, direct at 5°02′ Scorpio on 13 November — about 20 days.
Why are all three retrogrades in water signs?
Because of where Mercury happens to be in 2026. Mercury never strays more than about 28° from the Sun, so its retrogrades cluster near the Sun’s seasonal position; in 2026 that puts all three in Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio, the three water signs. That is an accident of the calendar, not a plan. The tradition reads a water-sign Mercury retrograde as turning the mind toward feeling and memory rather than logic — a reading of the geometry, not something the geometry causes.
What is a Mercury retrograde shadow period?
The stretches on either side of the retrograde when Mercury crosses the same degrees a second time. Before it turns back it first passes the degree it will later return to; after it turns forward again it re-covers the ground it lost. Some astrologers count these “shadow” weeks as part of the effect. Their edges are set by the two station degrees above, so they can be read straight off the dates — the retrograde itself is the three-week window between the stations.
Does Mercury retrograde actually affect anything?
Nothing in the mechanics. Mercury appearing to move backwards changes nothing about a conversation, a contract or a device; the planet is tens of millions of miles away and merely looks reversed from here. The tradition treats the window as a time to review, re-read and expect crossed wires, and many people find the frame useful. OrbHeaven keeps the two apart: it gives you the exact dates and says plainly that what they mean is interpretation, not a prediction.
Where this is disputed
Whether Mercury retrograde corresponds to anything measurable has not been established, and the controlled studies that exist have not found the effects described. Astrologers read it as a meaningful rhythm; this site treats it as a framework for reflection rather than a claim about cause.

Which five planets are in retrograde in October 2026, and what does it mean?
Venus, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are all retrograde together from 3 October 2026 until Pluto turns direct late on 15 October (Eastern) / 16 October (UTC). Here is what retrograde actually means, why so many overlap, and what the tradition reads into it.
What are chart patterns in astrology?
A chart pattern is a shape several planets make — a grand trine, T-square, grand cross, yod or kite. Here is what each one is, drawn from a real chart.
How accurate is an astrology birth chart?
Two different things get called a birth chart’s accuracy. The astronomy is accurate and checkable; whether its meaning is accurate is a separate, unproven question. Here is what is measured, what is read, and what makes a chart wrong.
