Mercury in astrology: what it means, and where it is
Astrological tradition reads Mercury as how a person thinks, speaks, learns and gets around. Astronomically it is the smallest planet and the closest to the Sun, never far from it in the sky, and appears to run backwards three or four times a year. A birth chart shows where Mercury was at birth, by sign, degree and house. The position is calculated; what it means is a reading.

The planet, as measured
Mercury is the smallest planet and the closest to the Sun, at 0.39 of the Earth’s distance, and orbits it every 88 days. Seen from Earth it is never far from the Sun: at most about 28 degrees, so it is only glimpsed low in twilight. How far it gets varies from pass to pass, from 18 to 28 degrees. It returns to the same place relative to the Sun about every 116 days. For 20 to 24 days of each cycle it appears to move backwards, three or four times a year, about a fifth of the time. At its quickest it covers just over two degrees a day. Its symbol is ☿︎.

Astronomy or astrology?
The position is astronomy. OrbHeaven calculates Mercury for the moment and place of birth with a published astronomical engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac, shown to the degree and minute; the method is set out on how it works. Everything below this line is astrology: what the tradition reads into that position.
Interpretation
What the tradition reads Mercury as
In the astrological tradition Mercury stands for the mind in motion: how a person takes things in, puts them into words, learns and trades. Its sign is read as the style of thinking, its house as where the mind is busiest, its aspects as how thought works with the rest.
Rulership: Gemini and Virgo
Mercury is the traditional ruler of Gemini and Virgo, and by association of the third and sixth houses. The older tradition also grades Mercury as exalted in Virgo, in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces, and in fall in Pisces; the chart measures none of that. OrbHeaven uses rulership only for the chart ruler, Mercury for a Gemini or Virgo Ascendant.
Mercury in the signs
A Mercury sign is the sign Mercury was in at birth. Never more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, it is always the Sun sign or the one next to it, and about half of all births share the two. The tradition reads the sign as the manner of thinking and speaking:
- Aries
- quick and direct; thinks on its feet and moves on once the point is made.
- Taurus
- slow to decide and hard to shift; practical thinking that wants proof.
- Gemini
- its own sign; curious, fluent, quick, and fond of news and argument.
- Cancer
- a memory for feeling; thinking coloured by mood, family and what happened before.
- Leo
- speaks to be heard; confident opinions, a gift for a story, and pride in an idea.
- Virgo
- its own sign and its exaltation; precise, analytical, good at sorting what works.
- Libra
- weighs both sides before speaking; a diplomat’s mind that prefers agreement.
- Scorpio
- probing and private; looks under the surface and keeps its findings.
- Sagittarius
- thinks in big pictures; frank, enthusiastic, more interested in meaning than detail.
- Capricorn
- structured and patient; a mind for plans, procedure and what lasts.
- Aquarius
- independent and inventive; ideas held for their own sake and argued with detachment.
- Pisces
- intuitive rather than linear; thinking in images and impressions, not lists.
Where Mercury can be
Mercury in the houses
The house adds where. Houses are drawn from the birth time and place, so they need a time: without one OrbHeaven leaves them out rather than guessing. With a time, the tradition reads the house as where Mercury’s concerns turn up most readily:
- 1st house
- worn on the surface; a quick, talkative, curious manner noticed first.
- 2nd house
- money and possessions; a head for trade and earning by wits.
- 3rd house
- siblings, neighbours, short trips and daily talk; Mercury’s own house, full of messages.
- 4th house
- home and family; a household full of talk and books, or work done from home.
- 5th house
- play, romance and children; wit, games and writing done for the fun of it.
- 6th house
- work, health and routine; the mind applied to method, detail and getting it right.
- 7th house
- partnership; thinking done in conversation, and a partner who talks back.
- 8th house
- shared money, secrets and intimacy; a mind drawn to research and what is hidden.
- 9th house
- the long-distance mind; study, travel, publishing, belief, teaching and other languages.
- 10th house
- career and reputation; a public life in speaking, writing, teaching or trade.
- 11th house
- friends and groups; ideas worked out with others, and many contacts.
- 12th house
- solitude and the hidden; private thinking, and a mind that works best alone.
Mercury aspects
An aspect is a particular angle between Mercury and another point, kept within a set orb; OrbHeaven shows six. Mercury and the Sun can only ever be conjunct, since they are never even 30 degrees apart. The tradition reads Mercury’s easy aspects as thought that flows and its hard ones as a mind arguing with the rest of the chart. The angle is measured; the reading is not.
Mercury retrograde in a birth chart
The fact first. Mercury appears to move backwards about a fifth of the time, so roughly one person in five is born with Mercury retrograde. It never reverses: the Earth is being overtaken on the inside, and the drawing below shows how. OrbHeaven marks it from Mercury’s own motion at birth and finds the moment it turns to about a second.
Why Mercury seems to go backwards
The tradition reads a natal Mercury retrograde as a mind turned inward: thinking done privately before it is spoken, and a habit of going back over what was said. That is a reading of a geometry; Mercury appearing to move backwards does not cause anything in a conversation, a contract or a machine.
Finding Mercury in your own chart
Draw the free birth chart and Mercury is listed with its sign, degree, house, aspects and whether it was retrograde. The Timeline dates the slower planets’ aspects to your natal Mercury, and Mercury’s own stations; the sky today shows whether it is retrograde now; the When page lowers a day’s score for signing or starting something while it is, following the tradition: a convention, not a forecast. Without a birth time, Mercury is worked out across the whole birth date as a range of whole degrees, and on the twelve to nineteen days a year when it changes sign, both signs and no degree. No Ascendant, no houses, nothing guessed.
Questions about Mercury
- What is my Mercury sign?
- The sign Mercury was in when you were born: always your Sun sign or the one next to it, because Mercury is never more than about 28 degrees from the Sun. The free chart lists it with the degree.
- Does birth time affect my Mercury sign?
- Usually not the sign, but always the degree and the house. Mercury changes sign twelve to nineteen times a year, so on about one birthday in twenty-five the hour decides it and the chart shows both. Houses need a time.
- What does Mercury retrograde mean in a birth chart?
- Astronomically, that Mercury appeared to be moving backwards when you were born, true of about one person in five. The tradition reads it as a mind turned inward, thinking done privately first. A reading, not a cause.
- When is Mercury retrograde?
- Three or four times a year, for 20 to 24 days each time. This year’s dates are in the calendar above, from the engine, and the sky today shows whether Mercury is retrograde now.
- How does OrbHeaven calculate Mercury?
- With astronomy-engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac for the moment of birth, to the degree and minute. Every chart prints the engine, zodiac, house system and universal time, so it can be checked against any ephemeris.
