Venus in astrology: what it means, and where it is

Astrological tradition reads Venus as what a person values and is drawn to: love, pleasure, money, taste, and how they treat people and want to be treated. Astronomically it is the second planet from the Sun and the brightest object after the Sun and Moon. A birth chart shows where Venus was at birth, by sign, degree and house. The position is calculated; what it means is a reading.

The planet, as measured

Venus is the second planet from the Sun, at 0.72 of the Earth’s distance, and orbits it every 224.7 days. Seen from Earth the cycle that matters is 583.9 days: in that time Venus is an evening star, passes behind the Sun, returns as a morning star, and passes between Earth and Sun. Because its orbit lies inside ours it never appears far from the Sun: at most about 47 degrees, so it is only ever seen near dusk or dawn. For about 41 days of each cycle it appears to move backwards through the zodiac. Its symbol is ♀︎.

Astronomy or astrology?

The position is astronomy. OrbHeaven calculates Venus for the moment and place of birth with a published astronomical engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac, shown to the degree and minute; the method is set out on how it works. Everything below this line is astrology: what the tradition reads into that position.

Interpretation

What the tradition reads Venus as

In the astrological tradition Venus stands for attraction and value: what a person finds beautiful, what they enjoy and will pay for, and how they draw others in and keep the peace. Its sign is read as the style of that, its house as where it shows, its aspects as how easily it works with the rest.

Rulership: Taurus and Libra

Venus is the traditional ruler of Taurus and Libra, and by association of the second and seventh houses, worth and partnership. The older tradition also grades Venus as exalted in Pisces, in detriment in Aries and Scorpio, and in fall in Virgo; the chart measures none of that. OrbHeaven uses rulership only for the chart ruler, Venus for a Taurus or Libra Ascendant.

Venus in the signs

A Venus sign is the sign Venus was in at birth. Because Venus is never more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, it is always the Sun sign or one of the two either side: five possibilities for any birthday. The tradition reads the sign as the manner of valuing and relating:

Aries
quick to want and quick to say so; a chase enjoyed more than a settled claim.
Taurus
steady, sensual and slow to change; pleasure in what can be touched and kept.
Gemini
drawn by talk and novelty, with affection that travels through words.
Cancer
attached and protective; care shown by feeding, remembering and keeping close.
Leo
warm, generous and wanting to be seen; loyalty that expects appreciation back.
Virgo
devotion through usefulness; attention to detail as a form of love.
Libra
Venus in its own sign; a taste for balance, manners and the pleasure of being paired.
Scorpio
all or nothing; intensity, privacy and a long memory for loyalty and injury.
Sagittarius
open-handed and restless; affection that needs room, humour and somewhere to go.
Capricorn
reserved, and serious about commitment; worth is measured in what lasts.
Aquarius
friendly before it is intimate; a liking for the unusual, a dislike of being owned.
Pisces
tender and easily moved; a willingness to give that can forget to count.

Where Venus can be

Venus is never more than 47° from the Sun, so with the Sun at 12°35′ Libra on 5 Oct 2026 it can only be in Virgo and Libra, or part of Leo and Scorpio. A bound, not a likelihood: today Venus is at 8°21′ Scorpio, one point inside it.

Venus in the houses

The house adds where. Houses are drawn from the birth time and place, so they need a time: without one OrbHeaven leaves them out rather than guessing. With a time, the tradition reads the house as where Venus’s concerns turn up most readily:

1st house
carried in the manner itself; someone easy to like on first meeting.
2nd house
money, possessions and self-worth; a taste for comfort and a nose for value.
3rd house
siblings, neighbours and daily talk; a warmth that lives in conversation.
4th house
home and family; the need for a beautiful, peaceful place to return to.
5th house
romance, play and children; pleasure sought in the open, often by making things.
6th house
work, health and routine; affection expressed through service and good order.
7th house
partnership; relating as the main business of life, and a skill at it.
8th house
shared resources and intimacy; depth over breadth, feeling bound up with trust.
9th house
travel, study and belief; attraction to the foreign or the far away.
10th house
career and reputation; charm put to public use, and work that is admired.
11th house
friends and groups; love that begins as friendship, and a circle that matters.
12th house
solitude and the hidden; private affections, and generosity not always declared.

Venus aspects

An aspect is a particular angle between Venus and another point, kept when it is within a set orb; OrbHeaven shows six. From the astronomy: Venus and the Sun can only ever be conjunct, since they are never 60 degrees apart, and an aspect to the Sun or Moon is allowed one extra degree of orb. The tradition reads Venus’s easy aspects as charm without effort and its hard ones as wants pulling against something else in the chart. The angle is measured; the reading is not.

Venus retrograde in a birth chart

The fact first. Venus appears to move backwards for about 41 days once every 584, so roughly one person in fourteen is born with Venus retrograde. Nothing reverses: Earth and Venus are passing on the inside track. OrbHeaven marks it from Venus’s own motion at the moment of birth and finds the moment it turns to about a second.

The tradition reads a natal Venus retrograde as the planet turned inward: values worked out privately before they are shown, and a habit of reconsidering what, and whom, one wants. That is a reading of a geometry, not an effect of it; Venus moving backwards does not cause anything in a relationship or a bank account.

Finding Venus in your own chart

Draw the free birth chart and Venus is listed with its sign and degree, its house and every aspect, with the engine, zodiac, house system and universal time printed underneath. Without a birth time, tick the box: Venus is worked out across the whole birth date and shown as a range of whole degrees, and on the ten to fifteen days a year when it changes sign, both signs and no degree, because the hour decides it. No Ascendant, no houses, nothing guessed.

Questions about Venus

What does Venus mean in astrology?
In the astrological tradition Venus stands for what a person values and is drawn to: love, pleasure, money, taste and how they relate. The position is calculated; the meaning is a reading.
What is my Venus sign?
The sign Venus was in when you were born: always your Sun sign or one of the two either side, because Venus never appears more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. The free chart lists it with the degree.
Does birth time affect my Venus sign?
Usually not the sign, but always the degree and the house. Venus moves up to about a degree and a quarter a day, so the sign is settled on most dates; on a day it changes sign, the hour decides. Houses need a time.
What does Venus retrograde mean in a birth chart?
Astronomically, that Venus appeared to be moving backwards when you were born, which it does for about 41 days in every 584. The tradition reads it as Venus turned inward, values worked out privately first. A reading, not a cause.
What does Venus in a house mean?
The house is read as where Venus’s concerns most readily show: the second as money and worth, the seventh as partnership, the tenth as public standing. Houses depend on the birth time and place, so a Venus house needs a time; OrbHeaven does not guess one.
How does OrbHeaven calculate Venus?
With astronomy-engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac for the moment of birth, shown to the degree and minute. Every chart names the engine, zodiac, house system and universal time, so it can be checked against any ephemeris.
