Uranus in astrology: what it means, and where it is

Astrological tradition reads Uranus as sudden change: where a person breaks from the expected, insists on freedom and does things their own way. Astronomically it is the seventh planet from the Sun, the first found with a telescope, and it takes 84 years to go once round the zodiac, about a lifetime. A birth chart shows where Uranus was at birth, by sign, degree and house. The position is calculated; what it means is a reading.

The planet, as measured

Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun, at 19.2 times the Earth’s distance, and orbits it every 84 years; it was found with a telescope in 1781. Seen from Earth it spends six to eight years in each sign, and comes back to the degree it held at a birth only 82 to 84 years later. The Earth overtakes it about every 370 days, and each time Uranus stands opposite the Sun and appears to move backwards through the zodiac for about 150 days: about two days in every five. It never covers more than about a sixteenth of a degree a day. Its symbol is ♅︎.

Astronomy or astrology?

The position is astronomy. OrbHeaven calculates Uranus for the moment and place of birth with a published astronomical engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac, shown to the degree and minute; the method is set out on how it works. Everything below this line is astrology: what the tradition reads into that position.

Interpretation

What the tradition reads Uranus as

In the astrological tradition, which took Uranus in after 1781, it stands for sudden change and independence: where a person breaks with the expected, invents, rebels or wants out. Its sign is read as the mark of a generation, its house as where change arrives, its aspects as how it shakes the rest.

Rulership: Aquarius

Uranus has no place in the traditional scheme of rulers, which was settled long before it was found. Modern astrology gives it Aquarius, beside Saturn, and by association the eleventh house; some also call it exalted in Scorpio, which the chart does not measure. OrbHeaven uses rulership only for the chart ruler, where Uranus is the modern ruler for an Aquarius Ascendant.

Where astrologers disagree. Traditional astrologers give Uranus no sign and keep Saturn as the ruler of Aquarius; modern astrologers give Aquarius to Uranus. For an Aquarius Ascendant OrbHeaven shows both.

Uranus in the signs

A Uranus sign is the sign Uranus was in at birth. It stays six to eight years in each, so it is shared by a whole generation, and the drawing below shows the last lap of them. The tradition reads the sign as the way a generation breaks with the past:

Aries
change pursued headlong; a generation impatient to start again and to go first.
Taurus
shaking what was meant to stay put; change in money, land and values.
Gemini
change in how people talk and learn; restless curiosity and new kinds of message.
Cancer
new ideas of home and family, and of who and where one belongs.
Leo
freedom through self-expression; a generation that insists on being itself, loudly.
Virgo
reform in work, health and method, through better systems and tools.
Libra
partnership and fairness rethought; new ideas of what a couple or a contract is.
Scorpio
upheaval at depth; power, money and intimacy, and taboos broken open.
Sagittarius
freedom of thought and belief; travel, and a restless reach outward.
Capricorn
authority and institutions questioned, rebuilt, or broken open from the inside.
Aquarius
its modern sign; independence, invention and the ideal of the group.
Pisces
change through imagination and faith; boundaries dissolved and ideals that blur.

Uranus in the houses

The house adds where. Houses are drawn from the birth time and place, so they need a time: without one OrbHeaven leaves them out rather than guessing. With a time, the tradition reads the house as where Uranus’s concerns turn up most readily:

1st house
carried in the manner; unconventional, independent and hard to predict on first meeting.
2nd house
money and possessions; income that comes and goes, and unusual ways of earning.
3rd house
siblings, neighbours and daily talk; quick, original thinking and sudden news.
4th house
home and family; an unsettled home, frequent moves, or an unusual family.
5th house
romance, play and children; sudden attractions and creativity that breaks the rules.
6th house
work, health and routine; a dislike of routine and a talent for new methods.
7th house
partnership; a need for freedom within a couple, and partners who surprise.
8th house
shared money, sex and crisis; sudden turns in joint affairs, and sharp insight.
9th house
travel, study and belief; unorthodox ideas and journeys taken on impulse.
10th house
career and reputation; an unconventional path and sudden changes of direction.
11th house
friends and groups; Uranus’s modern house, networks, movements and unusual friends.
12th house
solitude and the hidden; insight that arrives out of nowhere, and private rebellion.

Uranus aspects

An aspect is a particular angle between Uranus and another point, kept within a set orb; OrbHeaven shows six. Uranus can make every one of them with the Sun, and a Uranus opposite the Sun at birth is always a Uranus retrograde. The tradition reads its easy aspects as change that arrives as opportunity and its hard ones as disruption. The angle is measured; the reading is not.

Uranus retrograde in a birth chart

The fact first. Uranus appears to move backwards about two days in every five, so roughly two people in five are born with Uranus retrograde. Nothing reverses: the Earth is overtaking it, as it overtakes Saturn. OrbHeaven marks it from Uranus’s own motion at birth and finds the moment it turns to about a second.

The tradition reads a natal Uranus retrograde as change turned inward: independence worked out privately, and rebellion kept under the surface. That is a reading of a geometry, not an effect of it; Uranus appearing to move backwards does not cause anything in a job, a home or a marriage.

Finding Uranus in your own chart

Draw the free birth chart and Uranus is listed with its sign, degree, house, aspects and whether it was retrograde. The Timeline follows Uranus as it moves: it dates its aspects to your Sun, Moon, personal planets, Jupiter, Saturn and angles, and the day it enters each sign, naming the house with a birth time. Your own Uranus is not one of the points it watches, so the squares, the opposition and the return are not on the Timeline; the drawing above shows when they fall. The sky today shows where Uranus is now, and the When page counts its angles to your chart against meditating, resting and signing, following the tradition: a convention, not a forecast. Without a birth time, Uranus is worked out across the whole birth date as a range of whole degrees, and on the very rare day it changes sign, both signs and no degree. No Ascendant, no houses, nothing guessed.

Questions about Uranus

When is my Uranus opposition?
At an age between 38 and 44, and the year you were born decides where: for births from 1920 to 2010 it came at about 39 for people born in the 1940s and about 44 for the early 1980s. The drawing above shows every fifth year.
Will I live to see my Uranus return?
Only in a long life: it comes at 82 or 83. A life that reaches 45 has seen the opening square, at 18 to 23, and the opposition; the closing square follows at 59 to 64. The tradition reads these as the cycle’s turning points.
What is my Uranus sign?
The sign Uranus was in when you were born. It stays six to eight years in each sign, so you share it with everyone born within a few years of you; the house and aspects are what differ. The free chart lists all three.
Does birth time affect my Uranus sign?
Almost never the sign; always the house. Uranus changes sign in only about one year in four, so the hour decides it on about one birthday in 900. Houses need a time.
How does OrbHeaven calculate Uranus?
With astronomy-engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac for the moment of birth, to the degree and minute. Every chart prints the engine, zodiac, house system and universal time, so it can be checked against any ephemeris.
