Saturn in astrology: what it means, and where it is

Astrological tradition reads Saturn as limits and time: the structures a person builds, the responsibilities they carry, and what only comes by working at it. Astronomically it is the sixth planet from the Sun and the slowest visible to the eye, taking about twenty-nine and a half years to go once round the zodiac. A birth chart shows where Saturn was at birth, by sign, degree and house. The position is calculated; what it means is a reading.

The planet, as measured

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun, at 9.6 times the Earth’s distance, and orbits it every 29.46 years. Seen from Earth it spends two to three years in each sign, and comes back to the degree it held at a birth 28 to 30 years later, in one pass or in three. The Earth overtakes it about every 378 days, and each time Saturn stands opposite the Sun and appears to move backwards through the zodiac for 134 to 141 days: more than a third of the time in all. It never covers more than about an eighth of a degree a day. Its symbol is ♄︎.

When Saturn returns

  1. First, at 28 to 30 · example: Jul 2028, Sept 2028, Apr 2029

  2. Second, at 58 to 59 · example: May 2058

  3. Third, at 87 to 89 · example: Jun 2087, Oct 2087, Mar 2088

Shaded: the ages every birth from 1920 to 2010 reaches each return, from the engine. Dots: one life, born at noon UTC on 1 Jan 2000 with Saturn at 10°23′ Taurus, one dot each time Saturn crosses that degree.

Astronomy or astrology?

The position is astronomy. OrbHeaven calculates Saturn for the moment and place of birth with a published astronomical engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac, shown to the degree and minute; the method is set out on how it works. Everything below this line is astrology: what the tradition reads into that position.

Interpretation

What the tradition reads Saturn as

In the astrological tradition Saturn stands for limits, time and structure: what a person takes responsibility for, where they meet delay or fear, and what they build slowly and keep. The tradition calls it the greater malefic, with Mars the lesser, and reads its lessons as hard but lasting. Its sign is read as the style of that, its house as where the work is, its aspects as how it presses on the rest.

Rulership: Capricorn and Aquarius

Saturn is the traditional ruler of Capricorn and Aquarius, and by association of the tenth and eleventh houses. The older tradition also grades Saturn as exalted in Libra, in detriment in Cancer and Leo, and in fall in Aries; the chart measures none of that. OrbHeaven uses rulership only for the chart ruler: Saturn for a Capricorn Ascendant, and for Aquarius beside its modern ruler.

Where astrologers disagree. Since the outer planets were found, many astrologers give Aquarius to Uranus instead; the traditional ruler is Saturn. For an Aquarius Ascendant OrbHeaven shows both.

Saturn in the signs

A Saturn sign is the sign Saturn was in at birth. It is shared by everyone born in the same stretch of two or three years; the drawing below shows one whole lap. The tradition reads the sign as the manner of taking responsibility:

Aries
patience learned the hard way; Saturn in its fall, independence that must be earned.
Taurus
slow and steady; security built carefully, and a long fear of not having enough.
Gemini
discipline of the mind; careful speech, serious study, and doubt turned into method.
Cancer
Saturn in detriment; caution about closeness, and care given dutifully more than freely.
Leo
pride held in check; Saturn in detriment, recognition that has to be earned slowly.
Virgo
exacting and dutiful; high standards, careful work, and a worry that nothing is finished.
Libra
Saturn exalted; fairness as a duty, commitment taken seriously, balance worked for.
Scorpio
endurance under pressure; control, privacy and a long memory, depth built over time.
Sagittarius
belief tested and rebuilt; a serious philosophy, and freedom that comes with rules.
Capricorn
Saturn in its own sign; ambition, structure and patience, the long climb taken calmly.
Aquarius
its traditional sign; principle and system, reform worked out carefully, distance as protection.
Pisces
structure for the shapeless; faith with discipline, and boundaries that are hard to keep.

Saturn every five days from noon UTC on 1 Jan 2000 until it is back where it started (2 Apr 2029), from the engine. Round the circle is the zodiac; outward is time, so the lap does not close on itself. The darker marks are its retrogrades, when it runs back over a few degrees. The ring is today.

Saturn in the houses

The house adds where. Houses are drawn from the birth time and place, so they need a time: without one OrbHeaven leaves them out rather than guessing. With a time, the tradition reads the house as where Saturn’s concerns turn up most readily:

1st house
carried in the manner; reserved, serious and self-controlled, older than one’s years.
2nd house
money and possessions; careful with resources, earning slowly and holding on to it.
3rd house
siblings, neighbours and daily talk; careful words, serious study and early responsibilities.
4th house
home and family; duties at home, a strict or distant parent, and roots put down late.
5th house
romance, play and children; pleasure taken seriously, and creativity that needs discipline.
6th house
work, health and routine; a hard and steady worker, careful with the body.
7th house
partnership; commitment taken seriously, an older or steadier partner, bonds that are tested.
8th house
shared money, debt and intimacy; caution about trust, and fears faced slowly.
9th house
travel, study and belief; serious learning, and a faith that has to be earned.
10th house
career and reputation; Saturn’s own house, ambition, authority and a long climb to standing.
11th house
friends and groups; few but lasting friends, and responsibility carried within a group.
12th house
solitude and the hidden; private fears and quiet discipline, strength found alone.

Saturn aspects

An aspect is a particular angle between Saturn and another point, kept within a set orb; OrbHeaven shows six. Saturn can make every one of them with the Sun, and a Saturn opposite the Sun at birth is always a Saturn retrograde. The tradition reads Saturn’s easy aspects as patience and structure that help and its hard ones as delay, pressure or fear. The angle is measured; the reading is not.

Saturn retrograde in a birth chart

The fact first. Saturn appears to move backwards more than a third of the time, so more than one person in three is born with Saturn retrograde. Nothing reverses: the Earth is overtaking it, as it overtakes Jupiter. OrbHeaven marks it from Saturn’s own motion at birth and finds the moment it turns to about a second.

The tradition reads a natal Saturn retrograde as discipline turned inward: standards set privately, authority questioned before it is accepted, and lessons revisited. That is a reading of a geometry, not an effect of it; Saturn appearing to move backwards does not cause anything in a career, a body or a debt.

Finding Saturn in your own chart

Draw the free birth chart and Saturn is listed with its sign, degree, house, aspects and whether it was retrograde. Saturn is one of the six planets the Timeline follows as they move: it dates Saturn’s aspects to the points of your birth chart, your Saturn return among them as Saturn conjunct your Saturn, its stations, and the day it enters each sign, naming the house it enters when there is a birth time. The sky today shows where it is now, and the When page counts Saturn’s angles to your chart for fasting, starting a habit, signing and clearing out, and against training hard, following the tradition: a convention, not a forecast. Without a birth time, Saturn is worked out across the whole birth date as a range of whole degrees, and on the rare day it changes sign, both signs and no degree. No Ascendant, no houses, nothing guessed.

Questions about Saturn

What is a Saturn return?
The time Saturn comes back to the degree it held at your birth: first between 28 and 30, again at 58 or 59, and a third time at 87 to 89, each in one pass or three. The tradition reads it as a reckoning: what was built is tested.
When is my Saturn return?
Between 28 and 30 for every birth from 1920 to 2010, depending on where the Earth and Saturn stood when you were born. Your chart gives the degree, and the Timeline shows the return, Saturn conjunct your Saturn, as it approaches.
What is my Saturn sign?
The sign Saturn was in when you were born. It stays two to three years in each sign, so you share it with everyone born in the same stretch of years; the house and aspects are what differ. The free chart lists all three.
Does birth time affect my Saturn sign?
Almost never the sign; always the house. Saturn changes sign at most three times a year, and in many years not at all, so the hour decides it on about one birthday in 450. Houses need a time.
How does OrbHeaven calculate Saturn?
With astronomy-engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac for the moment of birth, to the degree and minute. Every chart prints the engine, zodiac, house system and universal time, so it can be checked against any ephemeris.
