Jupiter in astrology: what it means, and where it is

Astrological tradition reads Jupiter as growth: where a person expands, finds meaning and gets lucky, and where they overdo it. Astronomically it is the largest planet, the fifth from the Sun, and it takes about twelve years to travel once through the zodiac, roughly a sign a year. A birth chart shows where Jupiter was at birth, by sign, degree and house. The position is calculated; what it means is a reading.

The planet, as measured

Jupiter is the largest planet and the fifth from the Sun, at 5.2 times the Earth’s distance, and orbits it every 11.86 years. Seen from Earth it comes back to the degree it held at a birth 11 to 12 years later, in one pass or in three. The Earth overtakes it about every 399 days, a little over a year, and each time Jupiter stands opposite the Sun and appears to move backwards through the zodiac for 118 to 124 days: nearly a third of the time in all. Even at its quickest it covers only a quarter of a degree a day. Its symbol is ♃︎.

Astronomy or astrology?

The position is astronomy. OrbHeaven calculates Jupiter for the moment and place of birth with a published astronomical engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac, shown to the degree and minute; the method is set out on how it works. Everything below this line is astrology: what the tradition reads into that position.

Interpretation

What the tradition reads Jupiter as

In the astrological tradition Jupiter stands for growth and generosity: what a person believes in, where they expand, take chances and find luck, and where they overdo it. The tradition calls it the greater benefic, with Venus the lesser. Its sign is read as the style of that, its house as where it grows, its aspects as how it works with the rest.

Rulership: Sagittarius and Pisces

Jupiter is the traditional ruler of Sagittarius and Pisces, and by association of the ninth and twelfth houses. The older tradition also grades Jupiter as exalted in Cancer, in detriment in Gemini and Virgo, and in fall in Capricorn; the chart measures none of that. OrbHeaven uses rulership only for the chart ruler: Jupiter for a Sagittarius Ascendant, and for Pisces beside its modern ruler.

Where astrologers disagree. Since the outer planets were found, many astrologers give Pisces to Neptune instead; the traditional ruler is Jupiter. For a Pisces Ascendant OrbHeaven shows both.

Jupiter in the signs

A Jupiter sign is the sign Jupiter was in at birth. It stays about a year in each, so it is shared with nearly everyone born within the same year or so; the drawing below shows which years. The tradition reads the sign as the manner of growing and believing:

Aries
growth by starting things; confident, enterprising and quick to bet on itself.
Taurus
growth through what lasts; generous with comfort, patient with money, fond of good things.
Gemini
Jupiter in detriment; curious about everything, learning widely, sometimes spread thin.
Cancer
Jupiter exalted; generosity through care, a big-hearted home, faith rooted in family.
Leo
growth through warmth and display; generous, proud, and fond of a grand gesture.
Virgo
faith in method; Jupiter in detriment, growth by improving things one detail at a time.
Libra
growth through partnership and fairness; luck that tends to arrive through other people.
Scorpio
depth over breadth; growth through intensity, research and other people’s resources.
Sagittarius
Jupiter in its own sign; restless optimism, a love of travel, teaching and big ideas.
Capricorn
growth that has to be earned; Jupiter in its fall, ambition held to rules and results.
Aquarius
growth through groups and ideas; tolerant, inventive and generous to the common good.
Pisces
its traditional sign; compassion, imagination and faith, generosity without much counting.

Jupiter in the houses

The house adds where. Houses are drawn from the birth time and place, so they need a time: without one OrbHeaven leaves them out rather than guessing. With a time, the tradition reads the house as where Jupiter’s concerns turn up most readily:

1st house
carried in the manner; open, optimistic and larger than life on first meeting.
2nd house
money and possessions; a gift for earning, and a habit of spending freely.
3rd house
siblings, neighbours and daily talk; a broad curiosity and a generous way with words.
4th house
home and family; a big household, a love of space, and roots that keep growing.
5th house
romance, play and children; pleasure taken generously, and luck in creative risks.
6th house
work, health and routine; growth through service, and a need to watch excess.
7th house
partnership; generous partners and luck through others, sometimes too much trust.
8th house
shared money, inheritance and intimacy; gains through others and a taste for depth.
9th house
travel, study and belief; Jupiter’s own house, the far horizon and the big question.
10th house
career and reputation; recognition, ambition on a large scale, and public trust.
11th house
friends and groups; a wide circle, helpful contacts and hopes on a large scale.
12th house
solitude and the hidden; quiet faith, private generosity and help that arrives unseen.

Jupiter aspects

An aspect is a particular angle between Jupiter and another point, kept within a set orb; OrbHeaven shows six. Jupiter can make every one of them with the Sun, and a Jupiter opposite the Sun at birth is always a Jupiter retrograde. The tradition reads Jupiter’s easy aspects as help and good timing and its hard ones as excess, overconfidence or promises too large to keep. The angle is measured; the reading is not.

Jupiter retrograde in a birth chart

The fact first. Jupiter appears to move backwards nearly a third of the time, so roughly one person in three is born with Jupiter retrograde. Nothing reverses: the Earth is overtaking it on the inside, as it overtakes Mars. OrbHeaven marks it from Jupiter’s own motion at birth and finds the moment it turns to about a second.

The tradition reads a natal Jupiter retrograde as growth turned inward: faith and meaning worked out privately, and generosity that is quieter than it looks. That is a reading of a geometry, not an effect of it; Jupiter appearing to move backwards does not cause anything in a bank account, a journey or a belief.

Finding Jupiter in your own chart

Draw the free birth chart and Jupiter is listed with its sign, degree, house, aspects and whether it was retrograde. Jupiter is one of the six planets the Timeline follows as they move: it dates Jupiter’s aspects to the points of your birth chart, its return to your own Jupiter among them, its stations, and the day it enters each sign, naming the house it enters when there is a birth time. The sky today shows where it is now, and the When page counts Jupiter’s angles to your chart for signing and for starting a habit, and against fasting, following the tradition: a convention, not a forecast. Without a birth time, Jupiter is worked out across the whole birth date as a range of whole degrees, and on the rare day it changes sign, both signs and no degree. No Ascendant, no houses, nothing guessed.

Questions about Jupiter

What is my Jupiter sign?
The sign Jupiter was in when you were born. It stays about a year in each sign, so you share it with nearly everyone born within the same year or so; the house and aspects are what differ. The free chart lists all three.
Does birth time affect my Jupiter sign?
Almost never the sign; always the house. Jupiter changes sign at most three times a year, so the hour decides it on about one birthday in 220, and the chart then shows both signs. Houses need a time.
What is a Jupiter return?
The time Jupiter comes back to the degree it held at your birth: 11 to 12 years later, and about every 12 years after that, in one pass or in three when a retrograde loop crosses the degree. The tradition reads it as the start of a new cycle of growth.
What does Jupiter retrograde mean in a birth chart?
Astronomically, that Jupiter appeared to be moving backwards when you were born, true of roughly one person in three. The tradition reads it as growth turned inward, faith worked out privately. A reading, not a cause.
How does OrbHeaven calculate Jupiter?
With astronomy-engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac for the moment of birth, to the degree and minute. Every chart prints the engine, zodiac, house system and universal time, so it can be checked against any ephemeris.
