Mars in astrology: what it means, and where it is

Astrological tradition reads Mars as drive: what a person goes after, how they assert themselves, and how they fight. Astronomically it is the fourth planet from the Sun, the first outside the Earth’s orbit, and unlike Mercury and Venus it can stand anywhere in the sky relative to the Sun. A birth chart shows where Mars was at birth, by sign, degree and house. The position is calculated; what it means is a reading.

The planet, as measured

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, at 1.52 times the Earth’s distance, and orbits it every 687 days. The Earth, on the faster inside track, laps it about every 780 days, or 26 months. Each time it does, Mars stands opposite the Sun and appears to move backwards through the zodiac, for 60 to 81 days, about a tenth of the time in all. How close those passes come varies, from 56 to 101 million km, and the closest recur every 15 or 17 years. On the far side of the Sun it is up to 400 million km away. It never covers more than four fifths of a degree of the zodiac a day. Its symbol is ♂︎.

Astronomy or astrology?

The position is astronomy. OrbHeaven calculates Mars for the moment and place of birth with a published astronomical engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac, shown to the degree and minute; the method is set out on how it works. Everything below this line is astrology: what the tradition reads into that position.

Interpretation

What the tradition reads Mars as

In the astrological tradition Mars stands for drive and heat: what a person wants enough to go after, how they compete, and how they get angry. Its sign is read as the style of that, its house as where the effort goes, its aspects as how it works with the rest.

Rulership: Aries and Scorpio

Mars is the traditional ruler of Aries and Scorpio, and by association of the first and eighth houses. The older tradition also grades Mars as exalted in Capricorn, in detriment in Taurus and Libra, and in fall in Cancer; the chart measures none of that. OrbHeaven uses rulership only for the chart ruler: Mars for an Aries Ascendant, and for Scorpio beside its modern ruler.

Where astrologers disagree. Since the 1930s many astrologers give Scorpio to Pluto instead; the traditional ruler is Mars. For a Scorpio Ascendant OrbHeaven shows both.

Mars in the signs

A Mars sign is the sign Mars was in at birth. It is not tied to the Sun sign: any Mars sign goes with any Sun sign. The tradition reads the sign as the manner of wanting and acting:

Aries
Mars in its own sign; direct, quick to start and quick to anger, best at the first push.
Taurus
slow to start and hard to stop; Mars in detriment, effort spent on what can be kept.
Gemini
fights with words; restless drive split between several aims, quick to argue and to let go.
Cancer
protective and indirect; Mars in its fall, anger held in and turned on whatever threatens home.
Leo
wants to be seen winning; generous, proud and theatrical, with courage that likes an audience.
Virgo
effort put into getting things right; skill in work, repair and useful detail.
Libra
Mars in detriment; drive spent negotiating, anger that waits to be fair and sometimes too long.
Scorpio
its traditional sign; concentrated, private and persistent, with a long memory for a fight.
Sagittarius
drive with a mission; outspoken and restless, keen on distance, sport and the next big aim.
Capricorn
Mars exalted; ambition with patience, effort measured out over years, discipline as strength.
Aquarius
fights for principles and groups; independent, contrary when pushed, effort put into ideas.
Pisces
drive that moves sideways; sympathetic and easily diverted, strongest when acting for others.

Mars in the houses

The house adds where. Houses are drawn from the birth time and place, so they need a time: without one OrbHeaven leaves them out rather than guessing. With a time, the tradition reads the house as where Mars’s concerns turn up most readily:

1st house
worn in the manner; energetic and direct, quick to take the lead or a quarrel.
2nd house
money and possessions; effort spent earning, and a fight for what is one’s own.
3rd house
siblings, neighbours and daily talk; sharp words, quick trips and arguments that clear the air.
4th house
home and family; effort spent at home, and old family tensions that flare there.
5th house
play, romance, sport and children; competitive fun and a strong appetite for pleasure.
6th house
work, health and routine; a hard worker, impatient with slow colleagues and the body’s limits.
7th house
partnership; drawn to strong partners, with desire and conflict both played out in pairs.
8th house
shared money, sex and crisis; intensity, and nerve when things go wrong.
9th house
travel, study and belief; fighting for convictions, and a taste for adventure abroad.
10th house
career and reputation; ambition in public, and work that asks for nerve and leadership.
11th house
friends and groups; effort spent on campaigns and teams, sometimes with friction inside them.
12th house
solitude and the hidden; anger kept out of sight, and effort spent behind the scenes.

Mars aspects

An aspect is a particular angle between Mars and another point, kept within a set orb; OrbHeaven shows six. Unlike Mercury and Venus, Mars can make every one of them with the Sun, and a Mars opposite the Sun at birth is always a Mars retrograde. The tradition reads Mars’s easy aspects as effort that goes where it is aimed and its hard ones as friction, haste or a fight. The angle is measured; the reading is not.

Mars retrograde in a birth chart

The fact first. Mars appears to move backwards about a tenth of the time, so roughly one person in ten is born with Mars retrograde, always with Mars at least 129 degrees from the Sun. Nothing reverses: the Earth is overtaking Mars on the inside, and the drawing below shows the next time it happens. OrbHeaven marks it from Mars’s own motion at birth and finds the moment it turns to about a second.

From the engine’s positions. From above: the Earth, inside and faster, overtakes Mars; each line points where the Earth sees it, and its tilt swings out and back. On the sky, forward is to the left, as it looks facing south from the northern hemisphere: Mars runs forward to 2, back through 3 to 4, then on again, and because its path is tilted a little to ours the way back does not retrace the way out. It never reverses.

The tradition reads a natal Mars retrograde as drive turned inward: force that builds before it shows, anger worked through privately, and effort that goes back over old ground. That is a reading of a geometry, not an effect of it; Mars appearing to move backwards does not cause anything in an argument, an injury or an engine.

Finding Mars in your own chart

Draw the free birth chart and Mars is listed with its sign, degree, house, aspects and whether it was retrograde. Mars is also one of the six planets the Timeline follows as they move: it dates Mars’s aspects to the points of your birth chart, and Mars’s own stations, as events. The sky today shows where it is now, and the When page counts Mars’s angles to your chart for training hard and against resting, following the tradition: a convention, not a forecast. Without a birth time, Mars is worked out across the whole birth date as a range of whole degrees, and on the four to nine days a year when it changes sign, both signs and no degree. No Ascendant, no houses, nothing guessed.

Questions about Mars

What is my Mars sign?
The sign Mars was in when you were born. Unlike Mercury and Venus it is not tied to your Sun sign: any Mars sign can go with any birthday’s Sun. The free chart lists it with the degree.
Does birth time affect my Mars sign?
Rarely the sign, always the degree and the house. Mars changes sign only four to nine times a year, so the hour decides it on about one birthday in fifty, and the chart then shows both. Houses need a time.
What does Mars retrograde mean in a birth chart?
Astronomically, that Mars appeared to be moving backwards when you were born, true of about one person in ten. The tradition reads it as drive turned inward, effort that builds before it shows. A reading, not a cause.
When is Mars retrograde?
About every 26 months, for 60 to 81 days, around the night it stands opposite the Sun. The drawing above shows the next time, from the engine, and the sky today shows whether Mars is retrograde now.
How does OrbHeaven calculate Mars?
With astronomy-engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac for the moment of birth, to the degree and minute. Every chart prints the engine, zodiac, house system and universal time, so it can be checked against any ephemeris.
