Neptune in astrology: what it means, and where it is

Astrological tradition reads Neptune as what dissolves: imagination, longing, faith and confusion, the places where edges blur. Astronomically it is the eighth and farthest planet, found in 1846 where calculation said it would be, and it takes about 165 years to go once round the zodiac, longer than any life. A birth chart shows where Neptune was at birth, by sign, degree and house. The position is calculated; what it means is a reading.

The planet, as measured

Neptune is the eighth planet from the Sun, at 30 times the Earth’s distance, and orbits it every 164.8 years. Seen from Earth it spends 13 to 14 years in each sign, so a life of 90 years sees it cover 193 to 203 degrees: a little more than half the zodiac. The Earth overtakes it about every 367 days, and each time Neptune stands opposite the Sun and appears to move backwards through the zodiac for 158 to 160 days: more than two days in every five. It never covers more than a twentieth of a degree a day. Its symbol is ♆︎.

Astronomy or astrology?

The position is astronomy. OrbHeaven calculates Neptune for the moment and place of birth with a published astronomical engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac, shown to the degree and minute; the method is set out on how it works. Everything below this line is astrology: what the tradition reads into that position.

Interpretation

What the tradition reads Neptune as

In the astrological tradition, which took Neptune in after 1846, it stands for what dissolves: imagination, compassion, faith, longing and confusion, the places where boundaries blur and things are not what they seem. Its sign is read as the dream of a generation, its house as where the fog or the vision settles, its aspects as how it softens the rest.

Rulership: Pisces

Neptune has no place in the traditional scheme of rulers, which was settled long before it was found. Modern astrology gives it Pisces, beside Jupiter, and by association the twelfth house; some also call it exalted in Leo or in Cancer, a dispute the chart does not measure. OrbHeaven uses rulership only for the chart ruler, where Neptune is the modern ruler for a Pisces Ascendant.

Where astrologers disagree. Traditional astrologers give Neptune no sign and keep Jupiter as the ruler of Pisces; modern astrologers give Pisces to Neptune. For a Pisces Ascendant OrbHeaven shows both.

Neptune in the signs

A Neptune sign is the sign Neptune was in at birth. It is shared by everyone born in the same 13 or 14 years, and the drawing below shows them. The tradition reads the sign as a generation’s dream, what it idealises and where it is easily fooled:

Aries
ideals of courage and a fresh start; the dream of beginning again without the past.
Taurus
dreams of security and the land; a longing for beauty, comfort and simple things.
Gemini
imagination in words and messages; ideals carried by stories, and confusion spread by talk.
Cancer
the idealised home and family; a longing to belong, and nostalgia for what never was.
Leo
the glamour of self-expression; dreams of fame, romance and the stage.
Virgo
ideals of service and health; faith placed in method, and doubt about every detail.
Libra
the dream of the perfect partnership; ideals of peace, fairness and harmony.
Scorpio
longing at depth; fascination with the hidden, with power and with what is forbidden.
Sagittarius
a generation of seekers; faith in travel, freedom and big beliefs.
Capricorn
ideals made practical; dreams of structure, success and institutions that can be trusted.
Aquarius
dreams of community and technology; faith that the group or the network will rescue everyone.
Pisces
its modern sign; compassion, imagination and faith at full strength, boundaries easily lost.

Neptune in the houses

The house adds where. Houses are drawn from the birth time and place, so they need a time: without one OrbHeaven leaves them out rather than guessing. With a time, the tradition reads the house as where Neptune’s concerns turn up most readily:

1st house
carried in the manner; gentle, elusive and hard to pin down on first meeting.
2nd house
money and possessions; a vague sense of worth, and income that drifts or inspires.
3rd house
siblings, neighbours and daily talk; a poetic mind, and messages easily misread.
4th house
home and family; an idealised or elusive home, and roots that are hard to locate.
5th house
romance, play and children; love seen through a haze, and a gifted imagination.
6th house
work, health and routine; service to others, and a body sensitive to what it takes in.
7th house
partnership; an idealised partner, and the risk of seeing what one wishes to see.
8th house
shared money, intimacy and crisis; boundaries that dissolve, and a pull toward the mysterious.
9th house
travel, study and belief; spiritual seeking, and faith in distant places and ideas.
10th house
career and reputation; a public image that inspires or blurs, and vocations of care or art.
11th house
friends and groups; idealistic circles, shared dreams, and friends who drift in and out.
12th house
solitude and the hidden; Neptune’s modern house, retreat, compassion and a rich inner life.

Neptune aspects

An aspect is a particular angle between Neptune and another point, kept within a set orb; OrbHeaven shows six. Neptune can make every one of them with the Sun, and a Neptune opposite the Sun at birth is always a Neptune retrograde. The tradition reads its easy aspects as imagination and sympathy and its hard ones as confusion, escape or self-deception. The angle is measured; the reading is not.

Neptune retrograde in a birth chart

The fact first. Neptune appears to move backwards more than two days in every five, so more than two people in five are born with Neptune retrograde. Nothing reverses: the Earth is overtaking it, as it overtakes Uranus. OrbHeaven marks it from Neptune’s own motion at birth and finds the moment it turns to about a second.

The tradition reads a natal Neptune retrograde as the dream turned inward: imagination and faith kept private, and illusions noticed late. That is a reading of a geometry, not an effect of it; Neptune appearing to move backwards does not cause anything in a belief, a body or a bank account.

Finding Neptune in your own chart

Draw the free birth chart and Neptune is listed with its sign, degree, house, aspects and whether it was retrograde. The Timeline follows Neptune as it moves: it dates its aspects to your Sun, Moon, personal planets, Jupiter, Saturn and angles, and the day it enters each sign, naming the house with a birth time. Your own Neptune is not one of the points it watches, so its square and opposition to itself are not on the Timeline; the drawing above shows when they fall. The sky today shows where Neptune is now, and the When page counts its angles to your chart for meditating and resting, and against starting a habit, signing and training hard, following the tradition: a convention, not a forecast. Without a birth time, Neptune is worked out across the whole birth date as a range of whole degrees, and on the rare day it changes sign, both signs and no degree. No Ascendant, no houses, nothing guessed.

Questions about Neptune

How much of Neptune’s orbit does one life see?
A little more than half. A life of 90 years sees Neptune cover 193 to 203 degrees of the zodiac, about six and a half signs, and no life sees it come back. The drawings above show one life’s arc and the generations each sign makes.
When is my Neptune square?
Its first square to itself comes at ages 38 to 42, and the opposition at 79 to 83 in a life that reaches it. The closing square and the return come long after any life. The tradition reads the first square as a midlife questioning of ideals.
What is my Neptune sign?
The sign Neptune was in when you were born. It stays 13 to 14 years in each sign, so you share it with everyone born in the same span of years; the house and aspects are what differ. The free chart lists all three.
Does birth time affect my Neptune sign?
Almost never the sign; always the house. Neptune changes sign in only about one year in eight, so the hour decides it on about one birthday in 1,600. Houses need a time.
How does OrbHeaven calculate Neptune?
With astronomy-engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac for the moment of birth, to the degree and minute. Every chart prints the engine, zodiac, house system and universal time, so it can be checked against any ephemeris.
