Pluto in astrology: what it means, and where it is

Astrological tradition reads Pluto as what is buried and what changes at depth: power, loss, endings and renewal. Astronomically it is a dwarf planet, found in 1930 and counted the ninth planet until 2006, and its stretched orbit takes 248 years, so its pace through the signs is far from even. A birth chart shows where Pluto was at birth, by sign, degree and house. The position is calculated; what it means is a reading.

The dwarf planet, as measured

Pluto was found in 1930 and counted the ninth planet until 2006, when astronomers reclassified it as a dwarf planet. It orbits the Sun every 248 years on a stretched path, between 30 and 49 times the Earth’s distance, and from 1979 to 1999 it was nearer the Sun than Neptune. Seen from Earth that makes its pace through the signs uneven: it took 11 years to cross Scorpio, from 1983 to 1995, and will take 32 to cross Taurus, from 2095. A life of 90 years sees it cover anywhere from 119 to 187 degrees, depending on the year of birth. The Earth overtakes it about every 367 days, and each time Pluto stands opposite the Sun and appears to move backwards through the zodiac for 158 to 163 days: more than two days in every five. It never covers more than a twentieth of a degree a day. Its symbol is ♇︎.

Astronomy or astrology?

The position is astronomy. OrbHeaven calculates Pluto for the moment and place of birth with a published astronomical engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac, shown to the degree and minute; the method is set out on how it works. Everything below this line is astrology: what the tradition reads into that position.

Interpretation

What the tradition reads Pluto as

In the astrological tradition, which took Pluto in after 1930, it stands for what is buried and what changes at depth: power, control, loss, endings and renewal. Astronomers reclassified Pluto in 2006 and astrologers kept it; the two are separate questions, and the new label changed neither the position OrbHeaven calculates nor the reading.

Rulership: Scorpio

Pluto has no place in the traditional scheme of rulers, which was settled long before it was found. Modern astrology gives it Scorpio, beside Mars, and by association the eighth house. OrbHeaven uses rulership only for the chart ruler, where Pluto is the modern ruler for a Scorpio Ascendant.

Where astrologers disagree. Traditional astrologers give Pluto no sign and keep Mars as the ruler of Scorpio; modern astrologers give Scorpio to Pluto. For a Scorpio Ascendant OrbHeaven shows both.

Pluto in the signs

A Pluto sign is the sign Pluto was in at birth, shared by everyone born across 11 to 32 years, depending on the sign; the drawing below shows which goes with which year of birth. The tradition reads the sign as a generation’s concern, what it holds on to and is ready to tear down:

Aries
the drive to begin over; power sought through courage and being first.
Taurus
deep change in money, land and ownership; a struggle over what lasts.
Gemini
the power of words and ideas; information as control, and minds changed.
Cancer
home, family and nation remade; deep attachment to roots, and fear of losing them.
Leo
power through self-expression; the will to stand out, and pride tested at depth.
Virgo
remaking work, health and method; control through detail, and a drive to repair.
Libra
partnership and fairness remade; relationships as the place where power is negotiated.
Scorpio
its modern sign; intensity, secrecy and power at full strength, with little held back.
Sagittarius
belief and meaning remade; faith tested, and a search for truth beyond borders.
Capricorn
institutions and authority under pressure; old structures torn down and rebuilt.
Aquarius
power in groups and networks; technology and the crowd as places where control shifts.
Pisces
the dissolving of old boundaries; deep change in belief and imagination.

From the engine, births on 1 January every fifth year 1920–2020: the age at Pluto’s first exact square to its place at birth, and at its opposition, up to 100; under the axis, the sign of birth. Only births 1925 to 1960 reach the opposition by 90.

Pluto in the houses

The house adds where. Houses are drawn from the birth time and place, so they need a time: without one OrbHeaven leaves them out rather than guessing. With a time, the tradition reads the house as where Pluto’s concerns run deepest:

1st house
carried in the manner; an intense, guarded presence others notice at once.
2nd house
money and possessions; a need to control resources, and worth rebuilt more than once.
3rd house
siblings, neighbours and daily talk; a probing mind, and words used with weight.
4th house
home and family; buried family history, and roots that are dug up and replanted.
5th house
romance, play and children; love felt at full intensity, and absorbing creative work.
6th house
work, health and routine; a drive to fix things, and habits overhauled from the root.
7th house
partnership; intense bonds, and relationships where power and trust are worked out.
8th house
shared money, intimacy and crisis; Pluto’s modern house, and a pull toward the hidden.
9th house
travel, study and belief; convictions held hard, and beliefs broken and rebuilt.
10th house
career and reputation; ambition with depth, and a public role tied to power or change.
11th house
friends and groups; circles that change a life, and power within networks.
12th house
solitude and the hidden; private depths, secrets, and change out of sight.

Pluto aspects

An aspect is a particular angle between Pluto and another point, kept within a set orb; OrbHeaven shows six. Pluto can make every one of them with the Sun, and a Pluto opposite the Sun at birth is always a Pluto retrograde. The tradition reads its easy aspects as depth and staying power and its hard ones as pressure, control or upheaval. The angle is measured; the reading is not.

Pluto retrograde in a birth chart

The fact first. Pluto appears to move backwards more than two days in every five, so more than two people in five are born with Pluto retrograde. Nothing reverses: the Earth is overtaking it, as it overtakes Neptune. OrbHeaven marks it from Pluto’s own motion at birth and finds the moment it turns to about a second.

The tradition reads a natal Pluto retrograde as deep change turned inward, worked out in private. That is a reading of a geometry, not an effect of it; Pluto appearing to move backwards does not cause anything in a life, a body or a bank account.

Finding Pluto in your own chart

Draw the free birth chart and Pluto is listed with its sign, degree, house, aspects and whether it was retrograde. The Timeline follows Pluto as it moves: it dates its aspects to your Sun, Moon, personal planets, Jupiter, Saturn and angles, and the day it enters each sign, naming the house with a birth time. Your own Pluto is not one of the points it watches, so its square to itself is not on the Timeline; the drawing above shows when it falls. The sky today shows where Pluto is now, and the When page counts its angles to your chart in favour of clearing something out, following the tradition: a convention, not a forecast. Without a birth time, Pluto is worked out across the whole birth date as a range of whole degrees, and on the rare day it changes sign, both signs and no degree. No Ascendant, no houses, nothing guessed.

Questions about Pluto

Is Pluto still used in astrology if it is not a planet?
Yes. Astronomers reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet in 2006; astrologers kept it. The label is astronomy and the reading is tradition, and neither settles the other. OrbHeaven calculates Pluto’s position the same way as every other body’s.
When is my Pluto square?
Your year of birth decides it. For births 1920 to 2010 its first square to itself comes at any age from 35 to 61, earliest for births around 1970; the drawing above gives the age for each year. The tradition reads it as a reckoning with power and control.
Will I see my Pluto opposition?
Only in a long life, and only for some years of birth. Births from about 1925 to 1960 reach it between 82 and 90; later births reach it after 90, and a child born in 2020 at about 158. The return, 248 years on, comes to no one.
Does birth time affect my Pluto sign?
Almost never the sign; always the house. Pluto changes sign in only about one year in eight, so the hour decides it on about one birthday in 1,500. Houses need a time.
How does OrbHeaven calculate Pluto?
With astronomy-engine, as a geocentric apparent longitude on the tropical zodiac for the moment of birth, to the degree and minute. Every chart prints the engine, zodiac, house system and universal time, so it can be checked against any ephemeris.
